Inetum (formerly Gfi and IECISA) has organized and coordinated the fifth PMB (Project Management Board) of the ProTego project, in Seville on October 27 and 28. This is the first fully face-to-face PMB meeting after the COVID-19 pandemic, attended by representatives of Marina Salud, Ospedale San Raffaele, ICE, University of Alcalá, IMEC and KU-Leuven, and with the on-line presence of IT_Innovation and IBM. This was also the last plenary meeting before the end of the project on December 31.

ProTego is a joint project with European institutions such as Marina Salud, Ospedale San Raffaele, ICE, Universidad de Alcalá, IMEC, KU-Leuven, IT_Innovation and IBM and which aims to help users of healthcare systems to address cybersecurity risks through a set of tools and awareness guidelines.

The ProteTego project, with funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, provides a set of tools with which healthcare organizations better assess and reduce cybersecurity risks related to remote device access to electronic health record data, including risk assessment and mitigation tools, as well as prevention and reaction methodologies and protocols, by introducing three main advances over current approaches:

  • Extensive use of machine intelligence: a combination of machine inference that exploits prior knowledge for security by design and machine learning from data for runtime threat detection and diagnosis;
  • Advanced data protection measures: advanced encryption techniques and hardware-based full-memory encryption, and multi-stakeholder IAM to control access ay by user devices, to protect data at rest and provide ultra-secure data exchange portals;
  • Innovative protocols for stakeholder education: use of security-by-design analysis to guide training and help stakeholders contribute to overall network security.

Inetum's expertise in cybersecurity, IoT and Artificial Intelligence makes the IT services company a technology partner and overall coordinator of ProTego, alongside European academic and healthcare institutions. Two months after its completion, according to Antonio Jesús Gamito González, Project Manager & ITIL Consultant at Inetum, "the project - as confirmed to us by the European Commission - has met all the deadlines for the delivery of documentation, deliverables, development, initial and intermediate tests, etc. and only the final tests and actions for the dissemination and use of its results are pending".

Joining the toolkit, which will be integrated and validated in IoT and BYOD-based case studies in two hospitals, is the Cyber Security Awareness Platform, which aims to improve cybersecurity awareness within healthcare organizations by providing a list of easy-to-reference educational materials.

Participating in the ProTego project are:

  • IBM Israel - Science and Technology Ltd
  • ICE Information Catalyst for Enterprise
  • Inetum in Spain
  • Interuniversitair Micro-electronica Centrum
  • Katholieke Universiteit Leuven
  • Marina Salud SA
