How CNP Assurances is developing an all-in-one intranet tailored to its staff

To bring together 8,500 employees spread across seven countries, CNP Assurances is developing a bespoke all-in-one portal with the support of Inetum.

8,500 employees, seven countries, around ten subsidiaries… and, until now, just as many intranets. Yet the intranet is the window through which a company presents itself to its own employees. The question, therefore, is no longer merely technical: how can this daily digital touchpoint be turned into a genuine driver of engagement, pride in belonging, staff retention and productivity? It is with this in mind that CNP Assurances has chosen to rethink its fragmented ecosystem, so that every employee, regardless of their country, is equally well informed about the Group.

“We had a French intranet that we opened up to the Group, but it wasn’t designed as a Group-wide intranet from the outset,” explains Jean-Sébastien Bouget, Head of Group Internal Communications at CNP Assurances. The existing solution was becoming outdated. Every change required an integrator, took time and was costly. The back-office system, which was not very user-friendly, even discouraged some contributors.

The insurer therefore worked with Inetum to define the scope of a future employee portal designed from the outset to support the Group’s strategic objectives and align with employees’ digital habits.

A simple and user-friendly intranet above all else

Before choosing a platform, CNP Assurances wanted to listen to its teams. The User Voice initiative, led by Inetum, yielded an unexpected result. “When we asked people what was most important for a future portal, usability came out on top – even ahead of content,” explains Jean-Sébastien Bouget.

A counter-intuitive result for a communications manager: people use an intranet for its content, not for the ease of navigation. Yet the message from staff was clear. The user experience was therefore placed at the heart of the specifications. The challenge goes beyond navigation. It is about moving beyond internal organisation, breaking down silos to offer an employee portal that reflects who they are, centred on their work and interests, simple to use and backed by a powerful search engine.

Other areas needed to be redesigned: the HR section, which was heavily used but deemed insufficiently structured, and the search engine, which was too broad and not relevant enough, thereby exacerbating the problem. The Group HR Directorate was also brought on board as a project sponsor to overhaul this area. Group news content, on the other hand, was well received.

A redesigned intranet as a single point of entry

The vision goes beyond a simple internal information site. The future portal is intended to be the daily point of entry for every employee. In practical terms, it will provide access to a powerful search engine, the Group’s international media, HR memos, quick links to everyday applications, an international directory, an events calendar, internal communities and practical information. The aim: a unified environment, accessible to all employees regardless of their country, serving as a single source of truth with reliable and up-to-date information.

To avoid information overload and maximise relevance, the intranet will be tailored according to the employee’s country, business sector and role. A manager will find their dashboard showing HR approvals to be processed, whilst an operational staff member will have direct access to their business tools. Ultimately, AI could transform this portal into a genuine assistant, capable of delivering the right information at the right time and reminding staff of what they must not forget.

Ease of use for content contributors is also one of the priorities set out in the specifications. Local communications staff, HR teams and business units must be able to draft and publish their content quickly, without the need for prior training. This is an essential prerequisite for ensuring the editorial vitality of the future portal.

A three-stage scoping process

For this scoping phase, CNP Assurances valued the expertise of Inetum, and in particular that of Amélie Lemaire, who led the initiative. “They have in-depth knowledge of the market, the key players and the inner workings of the industry. For us, this provides invaluable insight,” emphasises Jean-Sébastien Bouget.

The scoping process was based on three complementary stages: interviews with the Executive Committee to capture the strategic vision (“how could the intranet support your strategic plan?”), an international employee survey, and focus groups in several countries to design the intranet of the future. Launched in 2022, this in-depth project has maintained its momentum despite several changes in senior management and the succession of two strategic plans.

In parallel with the tender process, preparatory work has already begun: cleaning up the existing intranet, identifying the sections to be retained and their administrators, benchmarking solutions on the market, and designing the future homepage. The choice of platform is expected in the autumn, with deployment scheduled for early 2027.

The first indicator will be the portal’s international uptake. “Will Brazilians, Spaniards or Italians be visiting this portal more often?” summarises Jean-Sébastien Bouget. This audience measurement will be supplemented by several qualitative indicators: the employee NPS and contributor NPS, the relevance of the search engine, and the recency and quality of the content published. Taken together, these will enable us to assess whether the portal is fulfilling its mission: to strengthen engagement, a sense of belonging and loyalty amongst the Group’s 8,500 employees.
