Migration to AOSP device management for Teams Android devices

Migration to AOSP device management for Teams Android devices

Automatic firmware updates start on May 15

Microsoft is modernizing the management of Teams devices using Intune Android Open Source Project (AOSP) device management.

Expertise, offers, products

Creation date :

Between May and June, the entire portfolio of Teams phones, rooms, panels, and displays will migrate from the legacy Android Device Administrator model to AOSP through firmware updates. During the transition period, manual updates will still be possible. Starting July 2025, the rollout becomes mandatory and fully automated.

The mandatory firmware rollout begins on May 15, 2025, with AudioCodes and Cisco devices. Poly and Yealink follow on May 31, and Crestron and Logitech on June 15 (see schedule table). Updates will be installed automatically and cannot be paused or deferred.

Why this migration?

  • Reliability & future-readiness – AOSP is the new platform for more advanced management and security scenarios.
  • Simplified device management – Teams devices enroll directly as corporate; enrollment restrictions are no longer necessary.
  • Required action – Without AOSP profiles, devices will sign out after the firmware upgrade and remain offline until the migration is successfully completed.

Risks of postponement

  • Devices not enrolled in Intune will be unable to sign in.
  • Loss of future Teams features on Android.
  • Limited compliance (legacy Device Administrator policies do not migrate automatically).

Step-by-step guide for a seamless migration

  1. Prepare in Intune (available now)
    • Create an AOSP enrollment profile with the Teams Devices switch enabled.
    • Define at least one AOSP compliance policy (e.g. root detection, min./max. OS version, encryption).
  2. Perform the firmware upgrade
    • Once 'AOSP' firmware appears in Teams Admin Center, install it manually on test devices.
    • During installation, the device will automatically unenroll from Device Administrator and re-enroll using AOSP.
  3. Post-upgrade verification
    • Verify in Teams Admin Center that the Authenticator and Microsoft Intune apps are installed.
